In a world that moves at lightning speed, setting intentions offers us a way to slow down, reconnect with our purpose, and create meaningful change in our lives. Unlike goals, which focus on outcomes, intentions are about how we want to show up in the world—our values, our energy, and our presence.
What Are Intentions?
Intentions are conscious choices about how we want to live, feel, and be. They're the guiding principles that shape our daily actions and decisions. While a goal might be "lose 10 pounds," an intention would be "I choose to nourish my body with love and respect."
Why Setting Intentions Matters
When we set intentions, we're creating a roadmap for our inner journey. Intentions help us stay grounded, focused, and aligned with our authentic selves. They remind us of what truly matters when life gets chaotic or overwhelming.
How to Set Powerful Intentions
1. Get quiet and listen. Find a peaceful moment, perhaps with your morning coffee, to tune into what your heart is calling for.
My practice: I begin each day with meditation before my feet even touch the floor. This sacred morning ritual sets the tone for everything that follows. Throughout the day, whenever I feel stress creeping in or sense I'm drifting off course, I return to my breath and meditate again. It's my anchor, my reset button, my way back home to myself.
2. Focus on the present. Intentions live in the now. Use present-tense language like "I am" or "I choose" rather than "I will."
My practice: I'm a firm believer in the power of positive affirmations and staying rooted in the present moment. Our words carry frequency, and I know that what we speak, we become. The law of attraction isn't just a concept to me, it's a daily practice. I choose my words carefully, knowing they're shaping my reality with every syllable.
3. Keep it positive. Frame your intentions around what you want to invite in, not what you want to avoid.
My practice: What we think about, we bring about. This truth guides everything I do. I consciously direct my thoughts toward what I want to create, experience, and embody. When negative thoughts arise, and they do for all of us. I gently redirect my focus back to the positive, back to possibility, back to abundance.
4. Make it meaningful. Your intentions should resonate deeply with your values and who you want to become.
My practice: I set my intentions every single day. And like anyone else on this journey, I sometimes need to remind myself throughout the day what I've committed to. There's no shame in that. It's part of being human. The practice isn't about perfection. It's about returning, again and again, to what matters most.
5. Write it down. There's power in putting pen to paper. Keep your intentions somewhere visible as a daily reminder.
My practice: Journaling is my daily ritual of reflection and gratitude. Each evening, I write about the day that's passed and the present moment I'm in. I express gratitude for the blessings, lessons, and growth. There's something deeply motivating about seeing my thoughts on paper. It makes them real, tangible, and impossible to ignore. My journal is both my witness and my guide.
6. Care for your mind, body, and soul. Intentions are not just something we think about. They are something we live through, how we care for ourselves each day.
My practice: Working from home means movement isn't built into my day, and since I don't have children to chase around, I have to be very intentional about it. I make a point to move daily, whether that means getting in my steps, using weights, or spending time in the exercise room. I do this to keep my body strong, flexible, and supported, especially as I move through this season of aging gracefully. It is a commitment I make to myself because I know how much better I feel, physically, mentally, and energetically, when I honor my body this way.
Living Your Intentions
Setting intentions is just the beginning. The real magic happens when we weave them into our daily lives, through morning rituals, mindful pauses, or evening reflections. Let your intentions guide your choices, big and small.
Remember, this is a practice, not perfection. Some days you'll feel completely aligned with your intentions. Other days, you'll drift. And that's okay. Simply notice, breathe, and begin again.
